چکیده

Olfactory displays (digital systems that generate and diffuse odors to a human user with a purpose and meaning) have been proposed and researched to support learning and training in a number of educational settings. According to recent research, this emerging type of humancomputer interfaces has great potential for stimulating information recall, helping immerse learners into educational simulations, and supporting other human senses for learning. However, little is known on the usability aspects (effectiveness, efficacy, and satisfaction of use) of olfactory displays for learning. To be usable, olfactory displays need to be carefully designed as well as properly applied to educational settings. This paper discusses a proposal for future research on usable educational olfactory displays. Issues such as type of odors, odor diffusing and removal technologies, educational gaming software to be used with olfactory displays, and educational aspects will also be discussed.

Towards Usable Context-aware Mobile Handheld Applications

This paper presents author’s PhD research in progress on human-computer interaction with context-aware mobile handheld devices. The HCI related possibilities and problems are charted with several studies concerning different aspects of context-aware applications, including such as users’ perceptions of context, user defined rule-based user interfaces, and privacy. The thesis aims to provide des...

Impediments to designing and developing for accessibility, accommodation and high quality interaction

Universal design entails the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialised design. In the context of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), design for all entails the design of interactive artefacts accessible and highly usable by the broadest possible end user population, including disabled and elderly...

Patterns for Safety and Usability in Human-computer Interfaces Patterns for Safety and Usability in Human-computer Interfaces

Design patterns have been widely touted as a potential solution to the diiculty of expressing and sharing software design expertise. Patterns have also recently been suggested as a basis for capturing the characteristics of \usable" user-interfaces. We propose that patterns may also be useful for guiding development of human-machine interfaces for safety-critical systems. We consider usability ...
